BBC Scotland overlook the big issues

For reasons best known to themselves BBC Scotland felt that a spurious Aberdeen penalty claim was the lead story for their football page this morning.

Tonight a Scottish club will be playing a last 32 tie in the Europa League after admitting that five players had broken protocols and were unavailable for the match.

Alternatively, a 21-year-old Scottish footballer scored an outstanding winning goal in one of two top flight matches to be played last night while the team from Scotland’s third city created an unwelcome record of a sixth successive league match without scoring.

John Kennedy suggested that Turnbull’s form could earn a place in the Scotland squad for the European Championships but didn’t rate a front page mention with the BBC.

There are plenty of strong news lines there to select a lead story from but someone at the state broadcaster decided that they were less important than a penalty claim when Flo Kamberi fired the ball at Stephen Welsh from no more than three yards range.

In recent weeks as Celtic racked up five successive wins it seems that someone has decided to make penalty claims the big issue.

Albian Ajeti got the treatment away to Kilmarnock, last week Greg Taylor was the target after he was fouled against St Mirren with referee Don Robertson pointing to the penalty spot.

Even Aberdeen fans are likely to be puzzled by the judgement of the state broadcaster. The patience of many fans for Derek McInnes has snapped with frustrations turning on chairman Dave Cormack over his acceptance of the current situation.

Celtic are having a horrendous season but after 29 matches they are 19 points ahead of the Dons, there are far bigger stories worthy of coverage from the BBC.
