Juventus first team scout Matteo Tognozzi has been linked with a place in the new structure expected to be in place at Celtic next season.

With Peter Lawwell retiring at the end of June some key roles are expected to be created to make up for three years of largely disastrous signings.

Since January 2019 Vakoun Bayo, Marian Shved, Andrew Gutman, Manny Perez, Boli Bolingoli, Hatem Abd Elhamed, Luca Connell, Patryk Klimala, Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas have been signed with virtually no impact made on the first team.

The wage bill has also taken a hammering with expensive loan signings such as Shane Duffy, Oli Burke, Diego Laxalt, Jeremy Toljan, Moritz Bauer and Timo Weah leaving the club facing a massive rebuilding programme in the summer.

Dom McKay will switch over from the SRU to become CEO but a Director of Football or Sporting Director will be critical with Neil Lennon likely to be removed from the dug-out.

Over the last 18 years Stephen McGowan has developed a second to none reputation for anticipating the big decisions inside Celtic and revealed to Daily Mail readers that Tognozzi is a contender:

Juventus first team scout Matteo Tognozzi is in the mix to be Celtic’s new sporting director. And former Bournemouth and Huddersfield recruitment chief David Webb also wants to be considered for the newly-created post.

Sportsmail understands the Parkhead club have engaged headhunters to assemble a shortlist of candidates for interview. Manchester City’s Loan and Pathways manager Fergal Harkin – a former Nike executive well known to the Celtic hierarchy – has also been linked with the job.

The Parkhead club are preparing to revamp their football operations when chief executive Peter Lawwell retires in the summer.

Prior to Juventus, Tognozzi has worked with Zenit St Petersburg and in Germany with Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen.
