Scott Brown had no prior warning that Neil Lennon was about to resign as Celtic manager.

It seemed that the club had lined up a Stock Market announcement and website statement for 7am on Wednesday but at 10.30pm on Tuesday former Celtic View reporter David Friel announced his scoop on The Sun’s website.

Only a select few in Celtic’s inner circle were aware of the news but it wasn’t shared with the club captain or any of the players.

Within 30 minutes of the news on The Sun website almost every news outlet was reporting it as a fact with Celtic players alerted in the same way as everyone else.

Brown and Lennon were closer than most managers and captain’s during two spells at the club but even that bond was kept out of the loop as the Irishman went through the formalities of resigning from the job two years after returning to the club.

BBC: Scott you say the first that you heard that Neil was leaving was when you read it in the papers, did you not have any inkling, had he not mentioned it at all?

SB: No, it was quite quiet, we had a day off. It was late at night that we found out, it was a sad thing but it was one of those things that we weren’t 100% sure because it was in the paper at the time and there was a lot of rumours floating about. It’s a sad day when we found out. I sent a text message just to make sure that he was OK.
