The shadow of Liam Shaw moving to Celtic in the summer seems to be hanging over Sheffield Wednesday.

At 18 the striker should be living the dream of breaking through at the club he has supported and trained with since his primary school days.

Starting the season with a six point deduction for breaking Financial Fair Play rules, Wednesday are a point above the relegation zone with Shaw one of the bright spots of the season.

In normal circumstances Shaw would be handed a lucrative new deal but with attention from elsewhere and relegation a possibility Wednesday can only hope that they remain in the Championship then convince the teenager that they can develop his career.

Sheffield based website Examiner Live reports:

The links to Celtic refuse to go away but Liam Shaw will continue to look to make his mark at Sheffield Wednesday as long as he remains with the Owls.

Shaw is coveted by the Scottish side after a breakthrough season at Hillsborough in which he has already moved into double figures in terms of appearances and netted his first senior goal.

With his deal due to expire at the end of the season, links to Celtic have emerged as the Bhoys look to tie the Owls’ talented teen down to a pre-contract agreement that would see him arrive at Celtic Park in time for the 2021/22 season.

Wednesday themselves retain hope of keeping the player and will not allow him to go without a fight, with their resolve in keeping him in the January transfer window testament to their determination of not allowing a player who has come through their ranks to leave early on in his Hillsborough career.

There have been reports of the midfielder agreeing terms with Celtic prior to a move, with a £300,000 settlement fee mooted as a peace offering to Wednesday in any deal that takes him north of the border.

Over the last couple of years Celtic have increased their focus on the English transfer market with Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Afolabi, Luca Connell and Lee O’Connor all being uncovered and brought to Glasgow.
