Neil Lennon has back-tracked on his claim that Celtic have signed Liam Shaw from Sheffield Wednesday on a pre-contract deal.

On Tuesday, following his media session with daily newspapers the Celtic boss was widely quoted as saying that the 19-year-old had been signed, The Sun quoted him saying:

We’ve completed a deal for Liam Shaw, he’s signed a pre-contract. So that’s done and we are looking ahead. We’ve got a bit of work to do.

Tellingly there was no comment from Celtic or Sheffield Wednesday about the deal for Shaw who will be out of contract in June.

Pre-contract deals are something of a rarity with any sort of injury likely to change the circumstances of a move with Shaw still committed to Sheffield Wednesday, when the new broke he was involved in their match against Stoke City.

QUESTION: Is there anything you can tell us on Liam Shaw, there are reports that he might have signed a pre-contract coming up from Sheffield Wednesday?

N L: No. I can’t comment on that at the minute.

When the signing was announced on Tuesday some Celtic fans took that as a sign that Lennon would remain as manager with plans underway for next season.

Celtic are expected to undergo major surgery in the summer with four loan players returning to their parent clubs with the chances being that Odsonne Edouard, Kris Ajer and Ryan Christie could be sold rather than enter the final 12 months of their current contracts.
