Greg Taylor believes that Celtic have found their voice in Stephen Welsh.
The defender has finally been given a chance in his true position, bringing a bit of structure to Celtic’s central defence that has recently ‘starred’ Nir Bitton and Shane Duffy.
Livingston and St Mirren took full advantage of that makeshift duo but over the last two and a half matches things have improved without anyone getting carried away.
In the first post Dubai match, at home to Hibs one camera shot virtually showed Welsh positioning Diego Laxalt in position for a set piece. That’s a 21-year-old who hadn’t got near a Celtic place while the experienced Uruguayan was impressing at the 2018 World Cup Finals.
Kris Ajer and Welsh look capable of shoring up the central defence through till the end of the season with Greg Taylor impressed by what he has seen from Saturday’s goal hero as he told the Daily Record:
Welshy is not a quiet lad. Even at the start of the season. He leads and he talks. That is definitely beneficial for him and that is the reason he is doing so well at the moment.
He’s done superbly, really good. It was a terrific goal that he scored with a great delivery from Dave Turnbull and Welshy did really well. His all-round performance was superb, just the same as last Wednesday at Kilmarnock.
It was difficult for him at the start of the season, as it was for us all during that period. We lost a couple of games on the bounce and it was not easy for anyone within the squad.
But Welshy acquitted himself well in those games and ever since he has come back into the side he has been a breath of fresh air. Alongside Kris, they have made a good partnership.
If selected against St Mirren on Wednesday it will be the first time that Welsh has started three consecutive matches.
