Michael Stewart is amazed that Manchester United aren’t being linked with Odsonne Edouard.
The striker is out of contract next June with Celtic expected to cash in with the transfer this summer of their leading scorer.
A report in the Daily Mail suggested that Leicester were close to agreeing a £15m fee with Celtic which seems well below market value even allowing for his contract moving into its final year.
Manchester United have been linked with moves for Harry Kane and/or Jadon Sancho but either deal would cost the guts of £100m if they can persuade either club into selling.
Stewart started his career at Old Trafford and told Radio Scotland (30 minutes 20 seconds) that he’s surprised that his old club aren’t involved at the sort of prime Leicester are discussing:
Normally there’s no way you’d allow Odsonne Edouard to run down to a year left on his contract. That’s why £15m is on the table. Had this been last year, you’d have been talking double that. He’s clearly not been psychologically engaged at the start of this season. Now, you can see him come back to the fore.
Man United are desperate for a striker. They’ve got Edinson Cavani and that’s it. They don’t really have another striker. For £15m, that’s a drop in the ocean.
I’d be snapping their hand off to go and take him. I think he can go and play at any of the top clubs down south, Leicester I’m not surprised, they are one of the top teams and Brendan Rodgers knows him. For £15m, that is a steal, an absolute steal, but it’s what they’ll probably get him for because of a year left on his contract.
Celtic paid Paris Saint Germain a reported £9m for Edouard with the French side believed to have a 40% cut on any profit Celtic make from his transfer.
