Barring a completely unexpected hitch Aberdeen are expected to announce the signing of Scott Brown this week.

That’s the view of Keith Jackson who has been closed to the Celtic skipper than anyone else over the best part of 20 years.

Stephen Glass was announced as the new Aberdeen manager yesterday. Keeping the good news flowing, although some Dons fans will dispute that, the new management team is expected to be confirmed before the weekend.

With his playing deal expiring in June, Brown the player can be announced with his coaching/management role still to be defined.

There could have been a quieter and easier role for Brown behind the scenes at Lennoxtown next season but in the Daily Record, Jackson explains:

Given the enormous scale of his contribution – with 10 titles and another 12 Scottish and League Cups under his belt – it stands to reason there would be a job for life if he felt it was an offer he couldn’t possibly refuse.

But given the lack of clarity as to what the future holds – or what his place in a new-look set-up might look like – Brown has decided his own best interests will be better served with a fresh start. He’s much more astute than he likes to make out.

Self-deprecation may be his trademark but he’s much brighter than this cultivated image suggests, which is probably why he has chosen to travel a different path.

That it just happens to be the same one (Billy) McNeill forged all those years ago is a romantic twist of fate rather than an act of deliberate design. And yet here he is, nonetheless, ready to flee the nest and spread his wings into the management game.

Tommy Burns, Danny McGrain, Paul McStay and Roy Aitken all left Celtic after similarly significant careers, only Burns returned to the manager’s job.

Brown choosing his time of departure is a blow for Celtic at a time when they have an Interim Manager and a CEO counting down the days till retirement.

Dermot Desmond’s interview/ Q and A yesterday did nothing to reassure Celtic fans with the announcement of the captain moving on adding to the confusion.
