Stephen Kenny took some consolation from Ireland’s 3-2 defeat in Serbia which saw Shane Duffy relegated to the bench.

The one-time Dunfermline boss introduced a back three that included Seamus Coleman with Matt Doherty of Spurs playing on the right.

Duffy had played every single minute since Kenny took over from Mick McCarthy but as an old school centre-back in a 4-4-2 it won’t be easy for him to find a way back into the team.

Ireland scored first and last in last night’s match but conceded three in-between with Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic coming off the bench midway through the second half to score two critical goals.

Kenny remains without a win this season but took heart from aspects of the defeat as he told The Examiner:

Even though we lost the game, we thought it worked quite well. Seamus Coleman was brilliant at the back, marshalled the defence really well and the midfield were brave.

Duffy doesn’t look like being recalled for Saturday’s home match against Luxembourg which gives Kenny another 90 minutes to put his ideas over to a youngish group of players.

With his Celtic loan deal expiring at the end of this season the 29-year-old will take stock during the summer with his club and international career in need of a lift.
