Neil McCann is fearing a £700,000 tax bill from his days at Ibrox from Dave Murray’s disguised remuneration scam.

The former Ibrox favourite revealed his worry during a divorce hearing in which his homes in Murrayfield and in Spain are being put up for sale.

In 1999 McCann moved from Hearts to the old Rangers club as part of Dick Advocaat’s debt fuelled revolution.

Craig Moore, Tore Andre Flo and Ronald de Boer benefitted from the Discount Option Scheme which led to the £2.8m ‘wee tax case’ that remained unpaid when the club went in to liquidation.

McCann left for Southampton in August 2003 but 18 years later is fearing a massive tax bill that would eat into the properties he bought through the disguised remuneration scheme.

Covering the tax issue at his divorce case, The Sun reports:

When asked during a civil proof hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court how it would affect him, McCann said: “It’s not a pleasant thought. I wasn’t aware of this when I signed the contract and it causes me huge concerns.”

Neil McCann’s behaviour was given as the reason for the divorce. Having the disguised remuneration in a contract was the downfall of the scheme, had it been discretionary payments from Murray the BBC pundit would have been in the clear.

McCann could of course take the tax bill to the new club at Ibrox and ask them to cover for it or take up the issue with the agents who negotiated his contracts.

As well as his regular work with a variety of BBC outlets McCann also appears as a pundit on ‘Rangers TV’ and is currently the caretaker boss at Inverness Caley Thistle where his former Ibrox team-mate Billy Dodds is his assistant.

In December McCann described Odsonne Edouard’s penalty against Hearts in the Scottish Cup Final as unprofessional. It hit the net.

BBC Scotland have withdrawn the webpage that listed those that benefitted from Murray’s tax scam. Other media figures that were in on it include Barry Ferguson, Kris Boyd, Alex Rae, Stephen Thompson and Alex McLeish.
