Kemar Roofe’s brutal attack on Ondrej Kolar could have resulted in the death of the Slavia Prague goalkeeper.

That is the view of Czech FA Doctor Petr Kreji who witnessed the sickening attack during Thursday’s one sided Europa League tie at Ibrox.

Slavia were well on course to a place in the quarter-final draw when Steven Gerrard sent on Roofe to replace Scott Arfield. The former Anderlecht star lasted six minutes on the park before deciding to raise his boot above head height to plant his stuffs in the face of the Slavia keeper.

It was an amazing challenge; the severity was obvious to almost everyone watching with a red card issued to the Ibrox substitute.

After five minutes of treatment Kolar was stretchered off with the incident virtually ignored by the Scottish media as they deflected elsewhere.

Picking up on a report from the Czech Republic, The Sun reports Krejci saying:

Football is of course a contact sport and anything can happen but it shouldn’t be done intentionally. I can’t see what was going inside Roofe’s head but I think it was a deliberate injury and the game shouldn’t be played like that.

It was a criminal act for which he should receive a two-year ban unconditionally. He hit Kolar from a short distance away and he could have lost his eye or suffered a damaged cervical spine. It could even have been his life! This is about life and football is not about life.

UEFA have still to announce Roofe’s punishment which will almost certainly be for a minimum of three matches.
