A new Celtic fan group ‘Celts for Change 2021’ has published an open letter to incoming CEO Dom McKay.

Celts for Change was the biggest driver towards boardroom change in 1994, springing up out of the fanzine movement and providing a real voice and drive while the Supporters Association and Affiliation of Supporters Clubs seemed more intent on maintaining cosy relationships with the White and Kelly regime.

Fan engagement is apparently an area that McKay specialises in, he certainly won’t be short of groups and suggestions when he takes on his new job with plenty of areas that the club can improve on.

The number of emerging ‘fan groups’ may dilute some of the messages but there are a few key areas that most groups agree on with Celtic for Change 2021 setting out their letter under Football Operations, Football Governance and Club Persona, Identity. Rather than simply ask questions they also offer their solutions.

After losing the league (plus a CEO, manager and captain) Celtic face some massive tasks in the coming couple of months with Season Ticket retention absolutely vital to the forecasts for next season.

Highlighting some issues under ‘Football Operations’ CFC2021 point out:

There has been no balance in the quality and experience of some of our managers in the past, to highlight this look at the average revenue over 2 full seasons that  these two managers had, Ronny Delia £51 million compared to Brendan Rodgers £96 million, nearly £50million of a difference per season.

We have missed out on players because of numerous bungled transfers for small amounts of money that if signed, would have made an impact at the club, e.g. John McGinn, Fletcher, Toney, etc, etc.

We have on the other hand signed players for big fees that have contributed nothing to the team e.g. Marvin Compper £1million for 80 minutes, one alarming statistic is that from the beginning of the 9 in a row, we have spent over £34 million on players who never managed a full season of 38 games.

In the year to 30 June 2019 Celtic announced turnover of £83.4m, down from £101.6m the previous year. The 2019 figure included transfer fees for Moussa Dembele and Stuart Armstrong plus compensation for Brendan Rodgers.

McKay isn’t scheduled to start at Celtic until July 1 but with the Six Nations completed there seems no reason why a deal can’t be made with the SRU to bring that date forward.
