Shane Duffy has been left on the bench for Ireland’s World Cup qualifier at home to Luxembourg tonight.

The Celtic defender had played every minute of international football this season until Wednesday match away to Serbia where Stephen Kenny opted for a back three with Duffy on the bench.

After losing three goals to Serbia, Liam Brady and others suggested that there should be a place for Duffy but Kenny has decided to leave the on-loan defender on the sidelines.

Duffy has fallen out of favour at Celtic with his last appearance being on February 14 when he stood in for the injured Stephen Welsh in the 2-1 victory over St Johnstone.

Luxembourg are much improved in recent seasons and are no longer the push-over that they were a decade ago.

In their Nations League group they took 10 points from six matches, finishing ahead of Azerbaijan and Cypris but behind Montenegro.
