Whatever his motivations Gary Caldwell clearly isn’t interested in any popularity contest among Celtic fans. Thankfully his managerial hat hasn’t entered the ring to take over from Neil Lennon.

The former Celtic defender is the latest name wheeled out by the media to explain why his old club should form a Guard of Honour ahead of Sunday’s Glasgow Derby.

On a number of levels it isn’t going to happen not least because it never happened for Celtic at Ibrox in 2017 or 2019. For real fans it isn’t an issue, not something they’d expect or wish for but in the neutral world of the media it is something to get worked up around.

For Celtic fans the end of this season can’t come quickly enough, the sooner it is all over the better. Winning on Sunday will be welcome but insignificant in the bigger picture, this season has been a lost cause for quite a while, even the ultra-optimistic realised on January 2 that it isn’t happening this year.

Getting a top quality manager in as soon as possible is more important that three points on Sunday. Add in a Director of Football and there will be the first grounds for optimism since Ferencvaros left the country last August.

Caldwell was never quite a fan favourite, that isn’t likely to bother him as he seeks out a new career with his record at Chesterfield and Partick Thistle suggesting that he won’t be back in management any time soon.
