Willie Collum applied his own unique take on the Laws of the Game during 90 minutes of sub-standard refereeing in yesterday’s Glasgow Derby.

The most obvious flashpoint came when Odsonne Edouard had to take evasive action to avoid a dangerous lunge from Borna Barasic in the 27th minute.

No contact is needed when you have to protect yourself but rather than point to the penalty spot Collum reached for his pocket to yellow card the Celtic striker. With Celtic leading 1-0 scoring from the penalty would have put a very different complexion on the match. It was a decision in keeping with Collum’s overall performance.

According to BBC Scotland Celtic had 56% possession in the game, if there are 60 minutes of actual playing time that equates to the hoops being in possession for 33.6 minutes.

During those minutes Celtic managed 16 efforts at goal, eight of them being on target while their opponents managed nine and three.

With Celtic having the bulk of the ball and chances it would be natural to assume that they would also get the bulk of the free-kicks and their opponents edge out the card count. Never assume with Collum in charge.

Despite being in possession of the ball for 56% of the game Celtic managed to commit 16 fouls while their opponents were penalised just 13 times.

When it came to cards three Celtic players were booked, Edouard, Scott Brown and Diego Laxalt. Collum showed a Celtic player a yellow card once for every 5.3 fouls.

From 13 fouls only Alfredo Morelos from the visitors was booked which isn’t too difficult an average to work out. In 33 SPFL Premiership matches this season Steven Gerrard’s side haven’t conceded a penalty or had a player sent off.

Celtic are able to appeal against Edouard’s yellow card for simulation.
