With one emoji the short-list to become the next Celtic manager has apparently increased.

Last weekend Eddie Howe seemed almost over the line till his agent emptied a bucket of ice-cold water over that notion in a brief message to Sky Sports. Prior to the former Bournemouth boss it had appeared third time lucky with Roy Keane set to end his decade out of front line management.

Now, seven weeks after Neil Lennon resigned, Celtic are heading to Ibrox in a cup tie that has to be won to keep a miserable season flickering on.

Should Celtic offer the manager's job to Eddie Howe

Yes, absolutely. Howe is the perfect fit

Alan Nixon is never far from the movers and shakers in the English game, last month he dropped a strong hint to The Sun that Keane wanted the Celtic job but despite the bookies briefly refusing bets the market remains open with the Manchester United legend sharing his Sunday’s with Micah Richards and Jamie Redknapp.

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre has been getting mentioned again, Steve Clarke probably can’t be discounted but it looks like the guessing game will go into week eight as Kennedy sets up a squad for Ibrox against a backdrop of uncertainty.
