Scott McDonald has given one of the most honest answers ever when asked his views on Ryan Christie’s contract situation.

At the weekend it emerged that the midfielder will be out of contract in January 2022 after the Celtic website had vaguely mentioned that the deal he signed in November 2018 was for three years.

It had been assumed that the three years would run until the end of the 2021/22 season but he now finds himself in the fairly unique position of being able to negotiate moving as a free agent this summer.

Despite being off form this season there won’t be any shortage of interest in a 26-year-old current internationalist available without a transfer fee.

His agent is a genius, that’s what I say. If you are allowed to have a contract run out in mid-season that’s fantastic, for a player, for an agent. There’s a deal to be done whether it’s with the club (Celtic) or another club. How that has been agreed is very, very odd, it doesn’t happen very often in football, at all.

With his contract expiring in January 2022 Celtic should have been negotiating an extension or transfer in the summer of 2020, by the time the January Transfer Window ended everything was weighted in favour of the player.

This summer Christie is likely to have the European Championship to showcase his ability, this season he has scored nine goals for Celtic and four for Scotland.
