Celtic in amazing new contract blunder

Celtic could lose two current Scotland internationalists for nothing in the next eight months.

Recently John Kennedy confirmed that Leigh Griffiths would become a free agent this summer if Celtic didn’t take up a clause on his contract by April 30.

Now it has emerged that Ryan Christie’s deal runs out in January 2022 meaning that he can head south as a free agent. Having reached this stage in his contract it would take a bigger offer to get the midfielder to stay at Celtic while a reduced transfer fee could be accepted rather than the zero that would follow in January.

Celtic have prided themselves on being portrayed as a well run business but that appears to have collapsed in the last few years as Peter Lawwell prepares to empty his desk. Griffiths and Christie were both in the Scotland side that beat Serbia to reach the finals of the European Championships.

Picking up on a report from the Mail on Sunday, the Daily Record reports:

Celtic could be set to lose Ryan Christie for nothing with the Scotland hero free to sign a pre-contract in the summer.

The 26-year-old penned a Parkhead extension in November 2018 but the deal only runs until January of next year, reports The Mail on Sunday.

And that means Christie, who attracted interest from French side Nice last year, is now approaching the crucial final six months of his contract and could even use Euro 2020 as a shop window opportunity.

Back in November 2018 Celtic were vague with the announcement that Christie had signed for three more years, now it seems that the contract was for three years and two months.

Dom McKay’s job as CEO seems to be getting tougher with every passing day.
