Celtic in Egyptian transfer riddle

Celtic have been credited with an interest in Mohamed Magdy Afsha.

The playmaker plays for the Al Ahly, the world’s most successful club but any transfer to Scotland would have to overcome a number of obstacles with a work permit required.

It is still unclear what the post-Brexit rules are for playing in Scotland with Celtic already having David Turnbull, Tom Rogic and Ryan Christie available in the playmaker, number 10 role.

Christie is expected to move on in the summer but with Magdy Afsha under contract until 2024  he’s unlikely to be moving in a cut price deal with the full-back and striker positions the ones that Celtic are most in need of strengthening.

Kingfut reports:

Mohamed Magdy Afsha’s agent has revealed that his client has offers from Scottish giants Celtic as well as Galatasaray and Besiktas of Turkey.

The 25-year-old has established himself as the best playmaker in Egypt following his move to Al Ahly in the summer of 2019 from Pyramids FC.

In his debut season with the Reds, Afsha managed to guide the club to the treble, most famously scoring the late winner in the CAF Champions League final against arch-rivals Zamalek.

This season, he has found the back of the net three times while assisting seven goals as Al Ahly claimed the bronze medal in the Club World Cup and are in the race for all their remaining competitions.

And it looks like Celtic like the former ENPPI youngster and are considering a move for him next summer, according to the player’s agent Abdelrahman Ismail. Other clubs are keen on Afsha, including Turkish giants Galatasaray and Besiktas.

At this time of year agents are starting to flag up interest in their players but it would seem that a move into the Egyptian market is unlikely from Celtic.

A new manager and Director of Football are more likely to be scanning the British market for trouble free signings ready to slot in instantly.
