John Hughes has claimed that Leo Hjelde signed an extension to his Celtic contract before going out on loan to Ross County in January.

In June 2019 the defender signed a three year contract with Celtic from Rosenborg with his first season development halted by Lockdown.

After being on the Celtic bench for the 1-1 draw in January when 13 players had to self-isolate Hjelde went out on loan to Ross County, making his debut in a 5-0 defeat at Ibrox.

That didn’t put John Hughes off with the 17-year-old making nine appearances for a club battling against relegation.

Discussing Hjelde, the Daily Record reports Hughes saying:

He’s got a lot to learn but to come up here, he’s away from home and he’s settled in really well. Before he came here it was Leeds United who wanted him and he had to sign an extension for his loan to go through.

Celtic didn’t make any announcement about a contract extension, normally the club is quick to highlight younger players extending their deals.

Contract issues seem a little confusing, last week it was revealed that the club has a 12 month option on Leigh Griffiths’ contract, when he signed in 2018 the website stated that the deal was ‘until at least the summer of 2022’.
