Celtic fans are completely spilt over whether Leigh Griffiths should have his contract extended by 12 months.

The striker came off the bench at Aberdeen tonight, did very little for half an hour then nodded home a stoppage time equaliser as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

Celtic have until next Friday to activate a clause in his contract that will stick 12 months onto his current deal. If they don’t he can leave as a free agent although a new contract could be agreed at a reduced rate. According to The Sun activating his current deal will cost Celtic £1m.

Tonight’s strike was just the second time this year that Griffiths has scored. After coming back from Lockdown in poor shape he has always been playing catch-up.

It took until mid-October for him to start his first match of the season but that only lasted 45 minutes against AC Milan in the Europa League.

In November he came off the bench to score for Scotland in their Play-Off victory over Serbia, a month later he did the same at Hampden as Celtic edged Hearts to lift the Scottish Cup.

Over the next nine days his future will be decided, tonight’s goal won’t be the deciding factor, whatever Celtic do it is likely to be fiercely debated by fans.
