Jose Mourinho has taken to Instagram to celebrate the worst day in Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool career.

On This Day in 2014 the stage was set for the Liverpool skipper to take a massive step towards filling the big gap in his medal collection.

Under Brendan Rodgers Liverpool had shaken up Chelsea and Manchester City with a stunning run of form  that made them favourites to lift the EPL title and end a 23 year wait to be Champions of England.

A  nine-match winning run had raised expectations, around Anfield the team was greeted like the Hearts side towards the end of the 85/86 season with legendary status within touching distance.

Chelsea came to play a spoiling game, it was text-book Mourinho with Liverpool inspired by their brilliant skipper, 90% of Anfield was willing Stevie Gee to victory.

Alas disaster struck in the 45th minute in an incident that opposing fans have mocked Gerrard about for seven years. On the lush Anfield turf he slipped, Demba Bar ran away one-on-one and slotted his shot past Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool pressed and pressed for an equaliser but in the 90th minute substitute Willian scored a second for Chelsea. The legend of Slippy was born, he never did get his hands on an EPL winners’ medal.

The Anfield victory meant little to Chelsea but Manchester City took full advantage to win the EPL title by two points.
