Leigh Griffiths’ hopes of making it into the Scotland squad for the European Championships has been given a boost with the news that Ollie McBurnie won’t play again for Sheffield United.

McBurnie has been a regular throughout Steve Clarke’s reign even though he has still to score his first international goal.

Griffiths was recalled for the November internationals but his lack of game time saw him drop out of the squad for last month’s World Cup qualifiers with Che Adams and Kevin Nesbit brought in for their debuts. Lawrence Shankland also dropped out of those squads.

No one ever wants to see a fellow professional getting injured but if McBurnie doesn’t play again for Sheffield United his international place will be put in doubt.

Griffiths has to find a way back into the Celtic side if he is to have any chance of being in the Scotland squad. The 30-year-old has only started one match since the end of January and found himself substituted after an hour of the 3-0 Scottish Cup win over Falkirk.

Celtic have until April 30 to activate the clause in Griffiths’ contract otherwise he’ll be a free agent at the end of the season.
