Jonathan Afolabi was back on the scoresheet last night as Dundee won 3-0 away to Ayr United.

It was just the fourth goal of the season for the on-loan striker, his first since January 9 when he scored a dramatic late equaliser against Bonnyrigg Rose that took the Scottish Cup tie to extra-time before Dundee got through to face St Johnstone.

Four goals is a poor return for a striker but since moving to Dens Park Afolabi has only started four matches with another 15 appearances coming off the bench. Last night the on-loan Celt scored five minutes after replacing Jason Cummings with Dundee 1-0 ahead at the time.

Going out on loan is often seen as the solution to the development of a player but the club they go to don’t make any special allowances for their ‘project’.

Since Afolabi went to Dundee they have signed Osman Sow, Paul McMullan and Cummings as James McPake tries to find the goals to get the club back into the top flight.

Dundee look bound for the play-offs behind Hearts, it looks like Afolabi will require another season out on loan if he is to advance towards a first team place at Celtic. Last month Afolabi did score for the Ireland u-21 side in a friendly against Wales.
