Charlie Nicholas believes that Gordon Strachan is auditioning for the Director of Football role at Celtic.

The former hoops boss has been a regular at matches this season, sharing his views on Celtic TV and other platforms.

At the start of this season Gavin Strachan joined Celtic as first team coach with Craig Strachan a senior European scout at the club.

After leaving Celtic in 2009 Gordon went on to manage Middlesbrough and Scotland before returning to his first club, Dundee, where he is Director of Football.

Peter Lawwell’s announcement that he is retiring at the end of June was followed by Neil Lennon’s resignation which has left the structure within Celtic open to all sorts of speculation.

Picking up on his Daily Express column, the Daily Record reports Nicholas saying:

Director of football at Parkhead is clearly a job Gordon would be interested in, even if he is doing a similar role at Dundee at the moment.

Bringing Strachan back to the club he managed from 2005 to 2009 would also work for majority shareholder Dermot Desmond because he could be the frontman for him.

If Strachan is to become director of football then Celtic should come out and announce it – before a new manager is put in place. But would it be the right appointment?

Not for me, because I want modern, fresh appointments that the club can really build on. In the wake of the European Super League development, the Champions League could be ripped apart.

Celtic need to put a structure and a philosophy in place in which everything is aimed at competing at the top level in Europe.

Looking at the impact of Strachan being appointed Director of Football, Nicholas added:

What I would say is that I am not sure Howe would take the job if Strachan is director of football. And if that is the case then Celtic might need to look further down their list.

Roy Keane is probably third or fourth choice. If he is to be offered the job he will need others to knock it back. But that call might yet come.

Dom McKay started work at Celtic yesterday, shadowing Lawwell but there has been no comment or interviews from the in-coming CEO.
