Scott McDonald was completely underwhelmed with the news that Celtic have Charlie Wyke on a list of potential summer signings.

A decade ago Wyke was starting his career with Middlesbrough when he crossed paths with McDonald who was part of Gordon Strachan’s squad after they had both left Celtic.

Being compared with Lyndon Dykes isn’t much of a compliment even though the former Livingston striker has recently struck a decent run of goals for QPR in the Championship.

Wyke is out of contract at Sunderland at the end of this season, if they can win promotion through the play-offs they may be able to entice him to stay but with 25 goals from 38 appearances in League One his stock has never been higher.

As well as keeping an eye on a former Middlesbrough trainee, McDonald is friendly with Aiden McGeady who has been a big player this season at Sunderland as they strive to get back to the Premiership.

It is understood that Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke is on a list of potential summer signings. He has scored 31 goals this season in League One, he’s 28-year’s-old, he’s available on a free transfer

McDonald was clearly underwhelmed to hear that a former Middlesbrough trainee could be Celtic bound:

He’s got a pedigree in the lower leagues, now whether or not that would transfer over to Celtic I’m not quite sure that he’d be number one pick. Certainly, he is very robust, he’s raw, look at a Lyndon Dykes type, you know, he’d get you a lot with headers. Aiden McGeady has given him a lot of support this year, he’s thrived off that and he is one of the best players in League One.

He’s up for nomination (League One Player of the Year). He’s at that age, I know he is a free agent but there is no sell-on value, he’d have to be the real deal. If they bring him in he’d have to hit the ground running, there has to be goals in him, that’s where the value comes from, there’s no sell on value. I’m not really sure that there’s a Celtic signing.

If Eddie Howe does get the job and they are talking about wanting to produce young players for more money is that the type of signing that 1) Celtic want and 2) Is it going to excite the fans?

From Middlesbrough Wyke has played for Kettering, Hartlepool, Wimbledon, Carlisle and Bradford before moving to Sunderland in August 2018.

While that list of clubs isn’t particularly impressive Gary Hooper had been at Southend, Orient and Hereford before joining Celtic from Scunthorpe in 2010.
