Davie Provan believes that there is a halfway house option available to Celtic and Leigh Griffiths.
The club has until Friday to activate a 12 month option in his contract otherwise he is available as a free agent in the summer.
According to The Sun taking up that option would commit Celtic to £1m in wages which works out at £18,000 a week- way more that Griffiths could expect to earn at Hibs or Aberdeen.
For all his faults, including coming back from Lockdown as a disgrace as he admitted, Griffiths could have something to offer next season with a contract incentivised to ensure that he stays in shape and available for selection.
Returning to Celtic on a vastly reduced basic might be difficult to take for Griffiths but in cold terms he’d be picking up more than any player in Scotland outside of Glasgow.
Writing in The Sun, Provan explains:
Celts should think twice before binning Leigh Griffiths, even if the striker scarcely deserves another chance. But with Patryk Klimala gone and Odsonne Edouard in the departure lounge, they are well short up front.
McKay should offer Griffiths a reduced, incentive-based contract. Despite the striker’s contempt for his manager last summer, he’s still the best finisher in the league.
