Southampton are reported to be ‘keeping tabs’ on Leo Hjelde.

It isn’t uncommon for Southampton to be showing an interest in Celtic players but they usually it is after they have made their first team debut.

Fraser Forster, Victor Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk and Stuart Armstrong have all taken the journey south of the border to provide Saints with outstanding value.

Celtic signed Hjelde straight from school in Norway in the summer of 2019, after making the bench in the post Dubai match against Hibs he went on loan to Ross County where he has made nine appearances.

The Sun reports:

Saints are also keeping tabs on Celtic youngster Leo Hjelde who is on loan with Premiership strugglers Ross County.

Predictably Hjelde has been compared to Kris Ajer who moved to Celtic at a similar age then moved his way through the ranks.

The young defender will be 18 in August, with his Celtic contract running until June 2022 the hoops will be hoping to get him signed up onto a new long term deal.

Despite his youth after half a season on loan at Ross County the next Celtic boss is likely to take a good look at Hjelde in pre-season training.
