James Tavernier was left to front it up for ‘Rangers TV’ after helping his side get knocked out of the Scottish Cup by St Johnstone.

A year ago the Ibrox skipper took the unusual step of telling fans in the matchday programme that when the pressure is on, when they are favourites, him and his team-mates wilt under the strain.

Yesterday it was a familiar script for Tav as he y’know’d it through a stumbling, unconvincing performance in front of the camera just like his display on the park.

Stepping in for the suspended Young Nathan Patterson it looked like a glorious return for top scorer Tav when he headed into the St Johnstone net in the 116th minute.

Alas, Zander Clark soon took his revenge, heading the stoppage time equaliser in off the foot of Chris Kane to take the match into a penalty shoot-out.

Former Wigan utility man Tav did his captain thing, stepping up for the first penalty and watched his weak effort pushed away by Clark.

St Johnstone made a fool of Greegsy with their penalties, Kemar Roofe shared the pain with Tav and out they went. In six seasons at the club Tav has yet to add to the glory of his Irn-Bru Petrofac Challenge Cup winners medal from beating Peterhead in 2016. Twelve successive failures in cup competitions.
