Murdo MacLeod has warned the next Celtic manager that he will have to spend big to bring in a striker capable of scoring 25 or more goals per season.

Over the last three season’s Odsonne Edouard has virtually been the only striker at the club with a variety of issues effecting Leigh Griffiths while others like Patryk Klimala, Vakoun Bayo and Albian Ajeti haven’t made the contribution expected.

Every area of the team will need to be rebuilt after a season of misery but without someone capable of regularly putting the ball in the net the team will be up against it from Day One.

MacLeod told The Sunday Post:

Odsonne Edouard has been very good for Celtic in the past three years but he wasn’t as hot as everyone at Celtic wanted him to be in the past nine months. I think the team still created plenty of chances but the players just weren’t as lethal as they’d been previously. Points were dropped by missing chances.

In the past seven or eight years Celtic brought in a number of strikers that cost around about the £2m mark. One or two of them were very good but too many of them didn’t hold up.

That’s why they need to get it right this summer and if that means breaking their transfer record then that’s what they have to do. But I know that is easier said than done. It’s up to the manager and his scouting staff to source someone out of the top drawer

Edouard and Moi Elyounoussi have been this season’s top scorers but both are likely to be elsewhere when the transfer window closes at the end of August.

The return of James Forrest could replace the goals of Elyounoussi but bringing in two strikers that know their way to goal would give the whole team a purpose and boost.
