Steven Gerrard has been voted Manager of the Year by Scotland’s Football Writers.

Callum Davidson, Steve Clarke and Dave Martindale made it to the shortlist but missed out on the vote given to the Liverpool legend.

With media bans regularly thrown about and preview interviews shared from a club email the Football Writers have risen above those issues to give Gerrard their award after winning a trophy at the ninth attempt.

It has certainly been a remarkable season for the midfielder affectionately known as Slippy by opposing fans after failing to win the EPL during his long Liverpool career.

Over 36 matches Gerrard hasn’t had any players sent off, it took until the 93rd minute of the 34th match before a referee felt able to award a penalty against the Ibrox side.

Over a seven week period across new year three retrospective red cards were issued to Ibrox players following first half incidents missed by match referees and assistants. In each match Gerrard watched his side enjoy a single goal win.

Unfortunately the domestic cups haven’t been anywhere near as successful with two defeats in five matches.

In Europe Gerrard steered his side through to the knock out stages of the Europa League. Despite his side’s impressive domestic discipline they suffered two red cards in four matches with Kemar Roofe and Leon Balogun sent off in a 20 minute spell in the home defeat from Slavia Prague.

A week on Saturday Davidson will be looking to guide St Johnstone to their second trophy of the season. In the previous 100 years the Perth side have only won one trophy, the 2014 Scottish Cup.
