Chris McKee has become the first player in Scotland to be sent off for homophobic abuse.
The Ibrox starlet is on loan at Brechin but lost the plot shortly before half-time in the second leg of the SPFL Play Off against Kelty Hearts.
Brechin lost the first leg 2-1, down to 10 men they were defeated 1-0 today to lose their SPFL status and now find themselves in the Highland League with the nearest opponents 50 miles away.
Discussing McKee, The Sun reports:
The Northern Irishman was not involved in a challenge that left Dylan Easton grounded for the visitors. A couple of minutes passed before the referee brandished the red card for the 19-year-old.
The forward was in the changing rooms on 41 minutes, with the BBC confirming it was for ‘foul and abusive language of a homophobic nature.’ McKee is a youth international for Northern Ireland and joined Gers in 2018 from Linfield. His contract at Ibrox runs until 2022.
In 2019, after UEFA closed part of Ibrox for a Europa League tie due to racist abuse the club launched an inclusivity PR stunt called Everyone, Anyone.
You couldn’t write it. Today Brechin player Chris McKee (ON LOAN FROM THE CLUB OPEN TO EVERYONE) was sent off for homophobic verbal abuse!
