‘Should be barred from Celtic park for life’ ‘treated as mugs’ ‘absolute disgrace’ Lawwell is the target for angry Celtic fans

As he prepares to empty his desk after 17 years in power there won’t be many tributes from Celtic fans to out-going CEO Peter Lawwell.

Celtic’s domestic record during his reign is patchy, periods of domination matched by spells of misery under managers looked on as being hand-picked by the CEO for doing as they are instructed.

For a neutral account of his reign Celtic’s diminishing place in Europe tells a story. Fair enough competing with AC Milan, Barcelona and Manchester United is becoming more difficult but no-one can put up a case to justify regularly losing out to Maribor, Cluj, Ferencvaros, Sparta Prague, Malmo, Copenhagen and AEK Athens.

If Celtic are the global club that they claim to be they have a horrendous record against mid-ranking European clubs that don’t make claims of significance outwith their own borders.

This season has been the perfect storm. A failure to invest led to the Champions League KO from Ferencvaros, when Neil Lennon squealed about players wanting to leave the alarm bells should have been listened to.

By November four consecutive home matches had ended in defeat, in December the board offered fans a managerial review which would appear in the new year.

When John Hughes became the second Ross County manager this season to beat Lennon he decided to resign. More than two months later a replacement hasn’t been identified with today’s hammering at Ibrox another reminder of how Lawwell has watched standards collapse at Celtic over the last two years.
