Celtic and their business partners at Ibrox are each prepared to pay £25,000 to field a team in next season’s Lowland League.

The 2021/22 season begins on July 11 with the approval of the SFA board required for the plan to go ahead which would see Celtic Colts in action next season against clubs such as Cumbernauld Colts, BSC, Caledonian Braves as well as more regular names such as East Stirling and Berwick Rangers.

It has been made fairly clear that clubs in League One and League Two are hostile to the Colts idea but a trial season in the Lowland League could open the door to moving into the senior ranks.

Celtic haven’t played in the Reserve League since the 2018/19 season which consisted of 17 matches and proved very unsatisfactory.

With the financial problems caused by a season without fans there isn’t likely to be any Reserve League next season with the Lowland League offering some sort of bridge between youth football and the first team.

It isn’t clear if any home matches will be played, the visit of Celtic Colts would provide Lowland League clubs with the chance of a larger than usual crowd plus added hospitality.
