Update on Celtic’s Lowland League bid

Celtic Colts will have their place in next season’s Lowland League put to the vote tonight.

A show of hands earlier this month produced a majority of clubs in favour of the one-off move with an u-20 side joining the league but unable to go for promotion via a Play Off with the winners of the Highland League.

Celtic have been attempting for years to find an outlet to provide younger players with regular competitive football but have been given little encouragement from the clubs in the lower divisions of the SPFL.

That prompted an approach from the Lowland League with chairman George Fraser telling The Sun:

The rule changes will go before the clubs at the AGM and the vote will decide what we do next season. It’s up to the clubs to decide.

The proposal to bring in the Colts teams of Celtic and their Ibrox business partners has been met with some hostility including statements from the three feeder leagues into the Lowland League.

If tonight’s AGM vote goes as expected it means that a Celtic side will be in action next season against clubs such as Cumbernauld Colts, Bonnyrigg Rose, East Stirling and Caledonian Braves.
