Neil Lennon has described Scotland’s social distancing escape over Billy Gilmour as hard to grasp.

On Monday morning the midfielder returned a positive test on the back of Scotland’s 0-0 draw with England at Wembley.

By the time that the test came back Gilmour had flown back to Scotland’s hotel in Darlington, trained, dined and played golf with his team-mates.

Remarkably no Scotland players came up as close contacts with Gareth Southgate amazed to find out that Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell would have to self-isolate.

Back in January Lennon found himself at the centre of a storm following Celtic’s training trip to Dubai, on return 13 players had to self-isolate after Chris Jullien tested positive.

Contrasting the Celtic defender with Gilmour, the Celtic boss told TalkSPORT:

We went to Dubai for the right reasons. It wasn’t as severe in Dubai as it was back home. We were following all the protocols to a tee and came back with one positive case and we got thrown under the bus.

In my opinion the criticism was over the top. 13 players and three staff ended up isolating – which we found ridiculous. But there are no reports on other Scotland players in the camp not isolating and I find that very hard to grasp.

With 13 players self-isolating Celtic drew at home to Hibs and Livingston, just over a month later Lennon resigned following a 1-0 defeat away to Ross County.

Despite being without Chilwell and Mount England beat the Czech Republic 1-0 while Scotland lost 3-1 at home to Croatia.
