Peter Lawwell has left the building, ending a reign of almost 18 years as Celtic CEO according to podcaster Harry Brady.

The glorious send-off that the accountant had perhaps anticipated has turned into a damp squib with only a banner from the Green Brigade to mark his final day.

Although on the record interviews have become very rare since he announced the job offer to Neil Lennon at Hampden in May 2019 Lawwell’s influence has covered every area of Celtic with Lennon unable to appoint any of his own assistants second time around.

Brady told Celtic Underground:

Peter Lawwell finished at 5pm on Friday. Well, at some point on Friday, apparently. I don’t think that’s been formally announced because technically I’m sure his contracts paid up, but apparently, Friday was actually his last day.

That’s part of the reason that prompted me to do this podcast because it hopefully clears the way for Dominic McKay to make all these announcements.

Back in the summer of 2018 Lawwell took part in a podcast with Brady for Celtic Underground. At the time he laid out glorious plans for the club to develop but it seems that little other than the disco lights came to fruition.

Soon afterwards Lawwell stalled on transfers for Dedryck Boyata and John McGinn, setting in place the first signs that the heights reached by Brendan Rodgers first two seasons wouldn’t be repeated.

Lawwell joined Celtic in October 2003, in the year to 30 June 2004 Celtic recorded turnover of £69m, the new CEO had a pro rata salary of £248,941. In the year to June 2019 Celtic’s turnover reached £83.4m with Lawwell picking up £3.5m. Had the 2004 turnover kept line with inflation by 2019 it would have reached £106,236,000.

Dom McKay has been shadowing Lawwell since April 19 but won’t take up his CEO role until July 1.
