Time running out on Griffiths deal

Time appears to have ran out on Leigh Griffiths earning a new contract with Celtic.

At the end of April the club declined to take up a 12 month option to extend the contract that he signed in September 2018.

The door was left open for the club to come up with a new offer but 10 days after Celtic’s non-internationalists reported back for pre-season training there has been no reports of Griffiths being at Lennoxtown.

Last summer Griffiths let himself go during Lockdown with Neil Lennon laying out some brutal facts last week live with Radio Scotland.

Griffiths did get a phone call from Ange Postecoglou before the Australian arrived in Scotland but that hasn’t been followed up by face-to-face talks at Lennoxtown.

Picking up on an interview with Sky Sports, on June 17 the Daily Record reported the striker saying:

I spoke to the manager on Tuesday morning and things seemed positive. We’ll have another chat at the beginning of next week when he’s out of isolation and we’ll take it from there.

It was a massive thing for him just to give me a phone. He didn’t have to but he took time out his day and gave me his ideas and his plans moving forward.

So it was a positive chat, we just need to wait until he’s out of isolation, we’ll have a chat face-to-face and we’ll see where we’re at.

Every level I’ve played at, I’ve scored. There’s still a lot to come from me, I’m only 30-years-old and I’ve still got a lot of years left.

That face-to-face talk appears not to have taken place, an appearance at Lennoxtown would have made it possible.

Before Celtic returned for pre-season training Griffiths had posted pictures on Social Media of his personal training sessions.

Should Postecoglou offer Leigh Griffiths another contract?

With each Celtic player being assessed and given individual programmes to return to peak fitness it looks like the former Hibs and Wolves striker is steering clear of a full assessment of his fitness.

There are bound to be other clubs interested in Griffiths based on past exploits but with his Celtic contract ending on Wednesday it looks his final last chance has passed him by.
