Celtic have issued a statement about Leigh Griffiths.
Throughout Tuesday there were a number of claims being made on social media about the conduct of the striker.
Wednesday’s newspapers didn’t carry the story but soon after Celtic’s pre-season friendly against Sheffield Wednesday was over the Daily Record revealed that the issue was being investigated by Police Scotland.
We have been made aware of online comments concerning Leigh Griffiths. The Club will now look into this matter carefully. Leigh has left the Club’s training camp as we do this. It would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this time.
Last Thursday Celtic gave Griffiths a new 12 month contract but if he is found guilty of an offence that deal will almost certainly be cancelled.
In that situation Griffiths will find it almost impossible to get himself a new club, any club showing interested in the 30-year-old will immediately be hit with a backlash from fans across social media.
On a practical front the removal of Griffiths from the Celtic squad further reduces the options available to Ange Postecoglou with the Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland less than a fortnight away.
