Celtic have sent Leigh Griffiths home from their Welsh training camp.

The striker didn’t play any part in today’s 3-1 friendly win over Sheffield Wednesday, two hours after the final whistle news emerged that he was the subject of a police investigation.

Rather than have a media circus around the training camp and remaining two matches Celtic have decided to send the striker back to Scotland.

The Daily Record reports:

Celtic have sent striker Leigh Griffiths home from their training camp in Wales as they investigate claims he sent inappropriate messages to a 15-year-old girl on Instagram.

The Scotland international is accused of sending a string of private messages to a girl who plays for a Premiership side.

Screenshots allegedly from Griffiths’ account went viral on Tuesday night appearing to show the 30-year-old reacting with an applause emoji to a picture of the user, who can’t be identified for legal reasons, in her underwear.

Police Scotland are investigating, while a source at the girl’s club told the Record she had been given guidance on her social media activity and her parents had been spoken to over the incident. She also told followers that Griffiths had been unaware of her age during the alleged exchange.

Last Thursday Griffiths signed a new 12 month contract with Celtic after his previous deal had expired.

Celtic will be taking legal advice on the matter but regardless of the outcome of the Police Scotland investigation it places a massive cloud over the future of the striker.

Last year Griffiths returned from Lockdown badly out of shape to the anger of Neil Lennon, tonight’s issues are on a completely different level, if found guilty of any related charge it would be difficult to see any club in the UK prepared to offer him a contract.
