Chris Sutton has hit out at Celtic’s recruitment team for leaving Ange Postecoglou short-changed for the Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland on Wednesday.

In central defence the Australian can choose between Dane Murray and Leo Hjlede to partner Stephen Welsh, whoever is picked will be starting their first competitive match.

The situation was known about as far back as January when Chris Jullien underwent knee surgery, the transfer of Kris Ajer was always likely while Shane Duffy’s loan move was ended early.

Bringing in an experienced central defender in time for pre-season training should have been a priority but within an hour of Ajer joining Brentford the club announced the signing of Carl Starfelt.

As his new team-mates face Midtjylland the Swede will be completing his quarantine, watching on from afar.

Reviewing that situation Sutton told the Daily Record:

It was bad enough people were thrilled to see Bitton back in the defence to help add some experience alongside Stephen Welsh and Anthony Ralston and Greg Taylor.

The fact it might be teenager Dane Murray alongside the other three going into the match on Wednesday is a ridiculous position for the manager to be left in by those in charge of recruitment given Kris Ajer was always going to go.

Carl Starfelt is signed and others will join the Swede but the fact none of them will face Midtjylland is a farcical situation.

If Celtic get past Midtjylland they will be away to PSV Eindhoven or Galatasaray on August 3/4.
