Joey Barton is being charged with an attack on his wife.

The former Ibrox star is currently managing Bristol Rovers but is facing a second stint in jail after a spell in Strangeways during his playing days.

Barton has tried to reinvent himself as an intellectual but that cunning plan was blown apart when he rocked up at Ibrox as part of the Warburton Revolution.

Following a couple of weeks of mouthing off he played his last game for the Tribute Act in a 5-1 derby humiliation, afterwards he knew who Scott Brown and Moussa Dembele were.

The Sun reports:

FOOTBALL manager Joey Barton has been charged with attacking his wife. The ex-Rangers midfielder is due in court tomorrow over the alleged assault on Georgia.

She suffered a head injury during the incident at a house in Kew, South West London. Childhood sweethearts Barton, 38 — manager of League One side Bristol Rovers — and Georgia, 35, married two years ago in a lavish ceremony.

The alleged assault on June 2 was days before their anniversary. Police confirmed a 38-year-old man had been arrested and later charged.

A spokesman for the Met Police said: “Joseph Barton, of Widnes, Cheshire, is due to appear on bail on Monday, July 26, at Wimbledon magistrates’ court charged with assault by beating.

“The charge relates to an incident which took place at a residential property in Kew on Wednesday, June 2 in which a woman received a head injury. London Ambulance Service did not attend. A 38-year-old man was arrested on June 2, bailed pending further enquiries, and subsequently charged.”

Barton also faces charges over an incident involving former Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel.
