Davie Moyes is looking forward to something of a homecoming at Celtic Park this afternoon.

The West Ham boss started his football career 40 years ago, breaking into a Celtic side that contained players such as Danny McGrain, Roy Aitken, Paul McStay, Tommy Burns, Murdo MacLeod, Frank McGarvey and Davie Provan.

His playing career never quite worked out as he had hoped but through hard graft he carved out a career in England with management taking him from Preston North End to Manchester United.

Succeeding Alex Ferguson and the brutal termination of his Old Trafford deal could have crushed him but now in his second stint at West Ham he has re-established himself as one of the top manager in England.

There has been regular bouts of speculation linking Moyes with managing Celtic but he’ll be in the away dug-out today with only playing times to reflect on with the hoops.

He told the West Ham website:

I wouldn’t put myself down as a heck of a player, but I played in a really good team and I got myself a Scottish Premier Division medal.

The days I had there were great days. I played with some great players, stunningly good players, most of whom played for Scotland, and at that time Celtic was as big a club as any club in Britain.

Glasgow is my city, so I know it well. I’ve got a lot of friends there, I’ve got my Dad coming to the game, so it’s great to be able to do that as well.

Moyes played 35 matches for Celtic including the 2-1 win away to Ajax in 1982.
