Ange Postecoglou kept a cool head as he watched Celtic beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 in his first match in charge.

It was a worrying start to the match as Josh Windass gave Sheffield Wednesday a third minute lead with Celtic looking like a hastily put together side for the first 20 minutes. With Stephen Welsh the most experienced outfield player that was exactly what they were.

As the first 30 minutes developed Celtic began to put some passes together, a minute after the restart Albian Ajeti showed some sharpness to bring Celtic level with a half chance just inside the Wednesday box.

Owen Moffat showed awareness and bravery in equal measure to put Celtic in front with a 55th minute snap shot from 18 yards before Odsonne Edouard completed the scoring for a much changed side for the final 30 minute section.

Picking up on his Celtic TV interview, The Sun reports Postecoglou saying:

Look to be fair they worked hard, it wasn’t the greatest start to the game. It took us a while to get into it. I think I said before the game we had a solid session yesterday and the players probably felt it a little bit.

But we grew into the game and to their credit I thought the middle part of the first half and particularly the second half we played some decent stuff and scored some good goals.

It would have been easy after the start we had because we had a lot of young boys for them to go into their shells and not be so positive but they reacted very well which is a very good sign.

We have been working hard in training and part of it is that we continue to play a certain temp throughout the game, we don’t drop off. We got our rewards in the end with Albian and Moff (Moffat), who scored a good goal.

I though Alby [Ajeti] and Odsonne worked very hard with their press and they got their rewards. Getting their goals will give them that confidence

We will see how everyone is. Obviously the lads who have played today are the ones who have been with us since the start. But looking at the international boys they have come back in good shape and they will play a part.

There is nothing wrong with winning, absolutely, particularly in the manner we did because we didn’t start well, we didn’t play well and we go a goal down.

So it just shows you there’s a bit of spirit among the boys, that they weren’t prepared to accept that and that is a good sign.

On Saturday Celtic face Charlton Athletic in the second of four matches before the Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland on July 20.
