Steven Gerrard has admitted that he has no idea when Alfredo Morelos will be back in Scotland.

The chunky striker managed to play for 15 minutes at the Copa America but has missed all of his club’s pre-season preparations.

Gerrard’s side open their SPFL campaign in eight days time, quickly followed by a Champions League qualifier against Malmo or HJK Helsinki.

With Kemar Roofe suspended for four UEFA matches and Jermain Defoe currently out injured Gerrard could be forced to play Cedric Itten or reply on Morelos coming back from Colombia match-fit and ready to play.

Gerrard told Sky Sports:

I don’t know. I can’t answer that for you. He is due back at some point, we’re not sure when but hopefully he’ll arrive when he’s ready.

I get asked this question (about Morelos’ future) in every window and every few weeks because you read more about Alfredo in terms of who he is linked with or where he’s possibly going to go rather than talk about what he does on a football pitch.

It’s getting a bit tiresome that question. For me, we want the best version of Alfredo, that’s all we ever asked for.

The manager, the players, the fans, that’s all we ask for. I’ve read a lot of stuff around Alfredo. I know where it’s coming from but I don’t know what’s going to happen with him.

Porto have been the main club linked with Morelos but like the January 2017 bid from China there has been nothing to back up the speculation.
