Celtic hold back on McCarthy over fitness worry

James McCarthy is a fitness concern for Celtic going into two crucial away matches.

The midfielder was signed as a free agent at the start of this month but is unlikely to be involved against Alkmaar or at Ibrox on Sunday.

McCarthy played for 15 minutes in the recent home wins against Hearts and AZ Alkmaar but surprisingly didn’t make the bench against St Mirren. Ismaila Soro, Tom Rogic and Albian Ajeti appeared as substitutes in the 6-0 victory.

Video Celts understands that there was a slight reaction to McCarthy’s two substitute appearances with a decision taken against St Mirren not to take any risks.

With the international break coming up after Ibrox on Saturday Celtic are hoping to have McCarthy ready to compete for a starting place against Ross County on September 11.
