Celtic have been linked with an interest in signing Troy Deeney from Watford.

The 33-year-old seems to be surplus to requirements at Vicarage Road after helping Watford bounce straight back into the EPL after a season in The Championship.

Deeney has achieved legendary status with Watford over the last decade but after 10 goals in 27 EPL appearances despite relegation in season 2019/20 his return last season was down to seven in 19 appearances last term in the Championship.

Odsonne Edouard’s likely departure will put the spotlight on Celtic’s need for fresh firepower with HITC reporting:

Celtic are showing an interest in signing Watford striker Troy Deeney before the transfer deadline – but he instead looks set for Birmingham City.

The Sunday Mirror (29/08, p66) report that Celtic are keen to add Deeney as they look to provide Ange Postecoglou with more firepower.

There seems to be some confusion over Deeney’s Watford contract. The normally reliable Transfermarkt claims that he has a contract running to 30 June 2021 but in November 2019 Sky Sports reported that he had signed a new four year contract.

A return to the Midlands would see the logical step for him to make but the prospect of competing for trophies and playing in the Europa League could provide a fresh challenge- if Celtic are genuinely interested.
