Steven Gerrard suffered a reality check tonight as he watched his side lose 2-1 to Malmo in a Champions League qualifier.

It took a goal in the 94th minute from Steve Davis to salvage something from the match as Gerrard watched his side lose their third successive match without the comfort and reassurance of a Scottish referee.

On the back of their recent win over Real Madrid confidence was sky high among the Ibrox squad who were already looking forward to facing Olympiakos or Ludogorets in the play-off round.

Two goals in two minutes from Soren Rieks and Veljko Birmancevic at the start of the second half handed the advantage to Malmo as the celebrated Ibrox defence and goalkeeper Allan McGregor was taken apart.

With Kemar Roofe and Glen Kamara still suspended for the return leg Gerrard will be desperate to get Alfredo Morelos back in his starting XI after an extended summer jolly in Colombia.
