Ally McCoist has urged Ibrox fans to stand by Steven Gerrard.

Tuesday’s defeat from Malmo was a stunning blow to the club finances and the reputation of their manager.

With no fans inside grounds last season Gerrard was able to cultivate the image of being a rip-roaring success despite winning less trophies that Callum Davidson.

Losses of £2m a month helped deliver the SPFL title while Celtic imploded under Neil Lennon.

The new season has brought even higher expectations among Ibrox fans but as they poured out of Ibrox before the final whistle on Tuesday night discontent was starting to come through.

Message boards and social media were calling out every aspect of the team selection and tactics with Gerrard now sitting on a record of three defeats on the bounce.

After some fans called TalkSPORT calling for the sacking of Gerrard, McCoist told the radio station:

I think that’s slightly harsh isn’t it? (on the Rangers fan who said he should be sacked). You take your team undefeated in the league, couple of defeats and it’s time to go? No.

Listen, it’s been a disappointing start for Rangers of course it has, no doubt about it, but you would like to think Steven and the team will turn it around.

If Steven doesn’t get another £10m to fill his squad up he might start to think that three years at Ibrox is long enough before a return to his family and media work.

Back in 2011 McCoist led the old Rangers club to a Champions League defeat from Malmo, within a year the club was dead.
