Steven Gerrard admitted that his stars panicked as they crashed out of the Champions League to Malmo.

A £5m reward from UEFA was on offer for the winner of last night’s match-plus a full house at Ibrox- with a further £35m to come for reaching the group stage.

Last month Real Madrid were reminded who are the Most Deluded Club in the World to send confidence sky high that John Lundstram, Cedric Itten and Fashion Sakala would be gracing the group stage of the Champions League.

Losing the first leg and to Dundee United was simply brushed aside in the excitement of the Gullibles returning to Ibrox for the first time since they were pumped 3-1 at home by Bayer Leverkusen.

The first half couldn’t have gone better for Gerrard’s side as Alfredo Morelos levelled the scores in the 18th minute.

Victory seemed inevitable when Allan McGregor escaped a red card, just before half time Malmo were reduced to 10 men when Bonke Innocent was given two very harsh yellow cards.

At that point Gerrard delivered the most important half-time talk of his career, it didn’t go down well.

The Daily Record reports the legendary Ibrox boss saying:

The situation of being 1-0 up at half-time… to then go 2-1 down you have to try different things.

A feeling of panic sets in, we were sometimes lumping balls into the box rather than staying calm and trying to play through and create with a little more calmness. The second half performance wasn’t good enough and that’s on all of us.

Rather than play Ludogorets for a place in the Champions League Gerrard must prepare himself for a Europa League play-off against Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty or Alashkert of Armenia.
